A recent headline screamed that “National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) transforms into IIM Mumbai”. While I have no engagement with NITIE, as an Industrial Engineer, I always looked at it with some pride. However, this news seems to indicate to me that MBAs are replacing traditional Industrial Engineering (IE). To me, this represents a loss of a discipline which applied engineering principles to management. To be subsumed by a discipline which simple looks at management as “administration”.
Yes, I know that there are still many courses for IE out there but this represents a sign of things to come…
